Tax & BIR Guide for Filipino Freelancers

As a freelancer in the Philippines, you're classified as a self-employed individual. Here's what you need to know:

1. Register with the BIR

Register as a sole proprietor or self-employed professional at your local BIR Revenue District Office (RDO). You'll receive a Certificate of Registration (COR) and Tax Identification Number (TIN).

2. File Quarterly Income Tax

Use BIR Form 1701Q for quarterly income tax returns. Deadlines are April 15, August 15, and November 15. Your annual return (Form 1701) is due every April 15.

3. Choose Your Tax Option

Freelancers earning under ₱3 million annually can opt for the 8% flat income tax rate instead of graduated rates. This simplifies filing and often results in lower taxes.

4. Issue Official Receipts

Register your books of accounts and official receipts with the BIR. Issue receipts to clients for every payment received.

5. Why This Matters

Having a proper ITR (Income Tax Return) helps you apply for loans, credit cards, visas, and government benefits like SSS, PhilHealth, and Pag-IBIG.
